Gingerbread in Germany

The children enjoyed the story of The Gingerbread Baby and had fun making their own gingerbread cookies. We decorated them and gobbled them up before they had a chance to run away!

Wassailing

The students have been travelling around the world with their passports in hand, learning about traditions and celebrations. In England, the students sang the 12 Days of Christmas, made holiday cards for loved ones and went wassailing (carolling) with our warm apple cider to spread joy to the students of Linwood. Happy holidays!

Singalong

Today we sang some holiday songs all together in the auditorium. What fun!,

Needs and Wants

We are learning about the difference between needs and wants. We have discussed what we need to live. We need food, water, shelter, trees, people and clothing. We want things like TV, toys, chocolate and cars. The pictures below show the students cutting out pictures of needs and wants from magazines and sorting them.

New Student

We are happy to welcome a new student to our class this week. He is able to speak Spanish and many of the children have shown an interest in this language as a result.  If your child is curious, here is one website that you may wish to explore together. SpanishforKids

We are songwriters!

This past week we finished our final lesson with singer and songwriter Harmony Parent.  Harmony was working with our class as a part of The Integrated Arts program. This program brings various artists into the classroom twice a year to integrate their type of art into the curriculum.  With Harmony we wrote and recorded a song about the different kinds of smart.  It was a lot of work and a lot of fun!  We are very proud of our song!

Our Reading Journey

Grade One is an exciting year as students learn how to read.  The children practice reading daily during Daily 5 and participate in guided reading lessons with Mrs. Turner.  At this early stage in learning to read, the students are learning how to apply some reading strategies and are working to recall common sight words.

Here are the strategies we have learned:
1) Point to each word and look at it while reading.
2) Look at the picture to help understand the story.
3) When you see a new word, get your mouth ready by making the first sound.
4) Re-read books over and over. This strategy helps words "stick" in our brains.
5) If you get stuck, go back to the beginning of the sentence and try again.

Some readers are learning how to sound out some words. Usually you only have to sound out the first part of the word and then your brain figures out what would make sense in that sentence.

Finally, we are practicing common "sight" words. These words are found in many books and used often when we write.  Please practice reading the spelling words with your child.

Here are some websites that help kids practice sight words:
 Primary games
Starfall word match

Happy reading!

Word Work

In Daily 5, we started Word Work. Some days we practice writing our spelling words the "grade 1 way" with lowercase letters that sit on the line. Some days, we practice our spelling words by making them with "wiki stix" or by playing the Spider Race game.

Our Class Brain!

We have been learning about the different kinds of smart (Multiple Intelligences). We know that everyone has smooth roads (strengths) and bumpy roads (challenges). We made a class brain in different colours to represent all the "kinds of smart". We each made a flag to show one way in which each of us is smart and we put these flags in our class brain! Ask your child what kind of smart they are!

Math Centers

We worked on our patterning skills during math centers today.  We practiced creating and extending patterns!

Fall Celebration

Today in Room 8, we celebrated the arrival of fall. The children listened to some great fall stories and studied their leaves. We enjoyed creating our leaf rubbings with fall colours. Finally, we read about the secret star hidden inside each apple and had an apple taste test. Happy fall!

Talking Sticks

Today Mr. Solomon came to the classroom. He taught about talking sticks. He brought his own big talking stick.  We got to make a classroom talking stick. First, we picked two beads and put them on a ribbon. Then we picked our own favourite colour of feather. Mr. Solomon tied our ribbons onto the stick. We put our name on the stick.

A talking stick is something you hold when it is your turn to talk.  Everyone else should be listening.
Maddy said, "It was fun making it!"
Regan said, "They are usually small."
Aidan said, "Mr. Solomon taught us that talking sticks don't actually talk!"
