Helping Our Community

The students of Room 8, along with their Room 15 buddies, helped our community. We walked to Truro Creek and picked up litter along the way and at Truro Creek park. This opportunity to serve the community was a powerful learning experience.  More than 18 bags of trash were collected! The students noticed that there were no garbage or recycling bins in the Truro Creek area and thought that might help solve the litter problem. During our next buddy session together, the children will be writing letters to their city councillor.

We connected our community clean up to the Seven Teachings. The children explained that they were acting like the buffalo, which represents respect, as they were showing respect to their community. They also identified that they were following the teaching of the eagle, which signifies love and care, as they were showing care for the Earth. Finally, the students recognized the teaching of humility (the wolf) was also relevant as they were putting the needs of others (the community) ahead of their own personal needs.

We found a bird's nest made with trash.
