Word Work

The children have been learning how to use "finger spelling" to spell new words. They say the word slowly and raise a finger for each sound (e.g. j-u-m-p).  Some words are tricky though and are not spelled as they sound. We call these words STINKERS!  We practice these common words through songs and games.

Today we played a new spelling game called "Word Bump".  We practiced spelling some tricky, but common, words using this game. By the end of grade one, students are expected to spell approximately 75 common words, such as: they, are, come, go, on, is, here, are, went, all and so on.

Winter!

We have been learning about winter!  We have learned how people prepare for winter and how we have different needs and wants in the winter.  We have also been learning about what animals do in winter.  Some animals stay active and adapt, some migrate, some hibernate while others torpor.  Did you know that bears don't hibernate?  Bears torpor- ask your child what it means!

Holiday Party

Room 8 celebrated the holiday season with many delicious snacks (thanks to the families for sending in the treats!) and many "Minute to Win It" games. Here are a few pictures of the silly holiday games we enjoyed.  We hope that everyone had a restful and wonderful holiday season.
