Personal Safety lessons

As part of our Health program, the grade one students have been learning about personal safety through the Kids in the Know curriculum. Lessons include:
Identifying safe adults
What is okay and not okay ( appropriate behaviour, including the importance of keeping private parts private)
Keep and Speak secrets ( which secrets are okay to keep and what secrets should be told to a safe adult)
The buddy system (it is safer to go places with an older buddy or adult)
Trusting your instincts

If you have any questions about this safety program, please feel free to ask Mrs. Turner.

Seven Teachings

Today we learned about one of the Seven Teachings. The bear represents courage which means facing a challenge even when you feel scared. In their journals, the children each wrote about a time that they were brave like the bear.  We had a sharing circle and each child shared how they have been brave.  It was a wonderful opportunity to practice polite, attentive listening and speaking with a clear, audible voice.

Tech Buddies

Today we explored some coding apps with our buddies. We used two free apps: Kodable and Daisy the Dinosaur. These coding apps introduce students to the world of coding through gamelike activities and challenges. Students learn how to program simple commands to achieve a targeted outcome. You may wish to try them out at home.

How to Have Fun in the Snow

The children have been learning about winter as part of their science and language arts programs. Our students are, of course, experts at having fun in winter.  Next week, Mrs. Turner and Ms. Jensen are off to an exciting technology conference in Florida and we have been discussing how the kids in Florida never get to play in the snow.

An idea was hatched! We decided to write a book that Mrs. Turner will share with teachers in Florida to help their students understand how to have fun in the snow. Beautiful paintings illustrated the detailed explanations of how to get ready to play outside, how to have fun and how to warm up (mostly with hot chocolate it seems).

Here is a few sample pages - I will try to post the book when all writers are finished...
